The Role

Working in a cloud-based software environment, the Controller manages and delivers financial leadership, accounting and tax services to our clients, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and professional standards.

The Controller also works closely with, and supervises, members of the Syncopate team including entry-level staff who may have little to no accounting experience.  Your role will be to provide training, development and evaluation of your team members, balancing the need for success of each employee, client, and Syncopate.

This role is a salary grade 9 which corresponds to Syncopate’s Management job stream level M2.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead client facing engagement teams to complete engagements for the following services:
    • Fractional controllership
    • Budgeting & cash forecasting
    • Financial reporting, internal controls & process improvement
    • Accounting & bookkeeping,
    • Payroll
    • Sales tax and corporate income tax
  • Deliver industry and technical expertise through client interactions, reports, technical work, management presentations and high-quality deliverables
  • Manage a portfolio of clients while understanding their business, key risks and ways to deliver added value; ensure clients’ needs are met and that relationships and accounts grow and develop
  • Accountable for engagement planning and scheduling as well as project financials (i.e., budgets, WIP, timely billing, collection, variance recognition)
  • Maintain quality control and apply specialized knowledge to anticipate, identify and address issues relevant to the client’s business, financial entries and reports
  • Network in the local business community, consider business development opportunities and contribute to the preparation and delivery of competitive proposals to meet client needs
  • Mentor, motivate and coach team members towards professional and personal development by setting clear expectations, providing feedback and conducting performance reviews

WHO YOU MIGHT BE

Strong candidates...

  • Have an accounting designation with 4 to 6 years of relevant public accounting experience
  • May be experienced public accounting Seniors or Managers, or have financial reporting, tax, internal controls, and process improvement superpowers that they’ve used in other roles
  • Are respected team leaders that are sought out for coaching and mentorship, are skilled at delegating, but are also willing to be hands on in a small team environment
  • Are skilled in all the relevant tools of the profession – large and small accounting systems, Excel, online collaboration software – and, more importantly, enjoy diving into new systems to learn how to get the best out of them

WHAT TO EXPECT

In this full-time role you will work 40 hours per week, primarily from home.  Interaction with coworkers and client personnel takes place mainly over video calls, email and online messaging.  That said, when public health guidelines permit, you'll be expected to attend in-person meetings in Markham and around the Greater Toronto Area from time to time (e.g. monthly).

You’ll be provided with a laptop, docking station, and two monitors.  Working from home, you will provide your own desk, chair, keyboard & mouse, and high-speed internet connection (required).

The starting salary range for this position is $98,000 to $120,000 on an annualized basis, depending on the candidate’s level of experience, education, and location within the GTA.  All employees are entitled to 4 weeks annual vacation time off per our Vacation Policy. After three months of employment, you will be entitled to our Health Care and Wellness Spending account, valued at $2,000 annually (pro-rated in your first year).
